What it’s truly like to have a baby—no book, blog, or podcast can fully prepare you for it. Only once your baby arrives will you truly know what it feels like to be a mom or dad. How do you stay balanced as a parent amidst the physical demands, sleep deprivation, and sometimes overwhelming emotions? Take care of yourself – and in turn, your baby – with our tips!
All beginnings are hard
Parenthood can be quite tough at times. And how could it not be? Babies demand a lot of your time and energy… Before you know it, the day is already over. Often, those little sweethearts also literally keep you up at night during their first weeks, months (or even years). As a result, your physical and mental reserves can sometimes run low.
Usually, the first weeks are the most challenging. That’s exactly when it’s important not to forget about yourself. Because when you take good care of yourself, you can also take good care of your little one. We’ve listed some ways for you to practice that much-needed self-care.
1. Physical well-being
Good balance starts with physical well-being. Getting enough sleep, a healthy diet and physical relaxation are the crucial elements here.
1.1 Protect your sleep
Nothing is more important than rest. So try to get enough hours of sleep. Is your baby not sleeping through the night? Then make sure to alternate shifts with your partner or ask for help from someone outside the home. That way, you can occasionally get a longer stretch of uninterrupted sleep.
1.2 Eat healthy and drink plenty of water
What you eat directly determines how energetic you feel. With healthy food, you get the most out of your day. Fruit and fresh vegetables give you the long-lasting energy you need. In contrast, high-calorie or fatty foods will make your stomach work overtime and you will lose a lot of energy to your digestion.
Also make a generous portion of vegetable puree or fruit salad for yourself while you are peeling fruit and vegetables for your little one.
Don't forget to drink enough, either. Water, we mean 😉. Because often you are so focused on your baby that you forget to hydrate yourself. And then, of course, you find it hard to function.
1.3 Get physical relaxation
The power of exercise is huge for young parents. You keep your energy levels up and in the outdoors, you strengthen your immune system and that of your child. Specifically for young mothers, light exercise also helps the recovery process after childbirth.
Many babies fall asleep more easily during a walk. Conveniently, that way you can focus all your attention on relaxing while your child sleeps in.
2. Mental health
Health is not just about the physical aspect. You also need a solid foundation mentally to deal with the challenges of parenthood. How do you work on that?
2.1 Take physical relaxation (bis)
Physical relaxation also acts on your mental health. A short walk or short yoga session is enough to reduce stress (get rid of cortisol, the ‘stress hormones’), boost your mood (hello endorphins, the ‘happiness hormones’) and order your thoughts.
2.2 Take a bath together
Bathing together with your child is bonding and relaxing. And once your child can sit up, bathing can also become a very active playtime. Either way, taking a bath with your child is an activity that recharges your batteries.
A bath book is ideal for providing a relaxing moment of wonder. Can it be a bit more active? Then again, this can be done with toys such as animals or sticky letters and numbers.
2.3 Pause for a moment
Dare to slow down and find calm when you can. Sit down for a cup of tea, take a moment to reflect on what might be causing you stress or find the Buddha within yourself and meditate for a while.
Go out without your child too. This certainly does not have to be a whole afternoon. You can even stop being a parent for a while by simply shopping alone. After a clear briefing for the babysitter, you will feel completely free.
3. Emotional well-being
The third side of your health triangle is the emotional side. Here, human contact is the necessary ingredient to stay balanced.
3.1 Find company
Plan fun times with friends and family. Do you like to meet at home? Then don't try to play the perfect hostess or host. Above all, enjoy being together. Do you enjoy meeting outside the home? In a company with other parents, you know that there is mutual understanding and you can share the caring tasks so that you too can have a carefree moment for once.
For a stress-free getaway, take a bottle of water and some healthy snacks for your baby in sealable bowls. That way, you will be prepared for any thirst or hunger moment.
3.3 Be gentle with yourself
Don't be too hard on yourself. The fact that you are reading this blog article shows that you really want to get it right. The best proof that you are a good parent!
And above all: make things easy for yourself!
Bathing, changing, dressing, feeding, putting your child to sleep... Your days as a parent are a succession of repetitive moments. Use the right tools to make it as easy and pleasant as possible for yourself and your child.
