How to encourage your toddler's independence

For parents, it's wonderful to see your toddler becoming more and more independent, right? You want to give them the best parenting possible to see them grow up as smoothly as possible and let go little by little. On the other hand, after hearing “No daddy, I want to do it myself” for the umpteenth time, you may start asking questions about how best to help them now and when that letting go will finally start.

Situation sketch: the morning rush with toddlers

Do you recognize this: getting up two hours early and still arriving at school just in time because those rascals absolutely wanted to put their shoes on themselves? Yes, we cherish their independence, but we parents also appreciate punctuality 🙂 . And we can help you with that!

Whether it's the skills to dress themselves, play on their own, choose their own snacks or refuse to be fed yet, it's an important milestone for them (and you!). We are happy to share some top advice on how to be your child's encouraging cheerleader during this adventure of growing up and becoming independent.

Why these skills are important

Teaching basic skills such as brushing teeth or cleaning up toys prepares your little one for success. These are motor, social and emotional skills that will come in handy as they grow up and become more independent. An independent child is more likely to grow up to be a confident adult.

With your guidance and some practice, they will master these self-care skills in no time. And remember, there are plenty of tools and tips that will make this much easier. Keep reading and we'll explain them one by one!

How to make your home safe for danglers

Creating a safe exploration space for your toddler is crucial. Besides the basics like covering electrical outlets and corner protectors for tables, consider child locks for your closet doors. That way you can (theoretically 🙂) relax with a book while your child explores.

You can also set up a low shelf in the kitchen especially for them, filled with safe utensils and toys, so they can pretend to cook alongside you. Just like that, you've nicely promoted their motor development and social independence in a safe way!

Step by step to an independent child

Giving choices, increasing self-confidence

Start by giving your little one children simple choices. Whether it's choosing a superhero outfit or holding a spoon and eating on their own, making choices helps them feel responsible and super confident.

Instead of the overwhelming decision of what to wear from the entire closet, offer your toddler two options: “Do you want the red pants today or the brown ones?” This not only makes the morning routine go faster, but also provides an emotional sense of decision-making power.

Create a simple step-by-step plan

Introduce new tasks by breaking them down into simple steps. It's like learning a dance - one movement at a time. This way they can celebrate small successes and feel like a champion, building toward the grand finale of being able to do everything on their own.

For example, if they want to eat independently, first show them how to pick something up with a specialized toddler fork, then try it together while still holding their hand, and eventually they can do it all by themselves.

Ergonomically designed to fit perfectly in little hands, these toddler forks are also safer thanks to the rounded corners. They can be used by children as young as 6 months and are made of lightweight but strong, durable and dishwasher safe material.

The same goes for learning to brush teeth. A great tool to start this is a child-safe toothbrush set. The toothbrushes come in 3 stages, so you can guide them step by step to make brushing teeth a good habit early on. The first toothbrush is even suitable for babies as young as 3 months old, with soft bristles that ensure baby's delicate gums are not damaged.

High-fives for trying

Every time your toddler tries something new or completes a task independently, it's high-five time! Celebrate every attempt, whether it's putting on a shoe or picking up a spoon. Your encouragement means the world to them and keeps their motivation high. It's all about the power and motivation of “You can do this!”

Mistakes happen and that's okay

Remember that the road to doing everything yourself is full of mistakes and that's totally okay. When your child stumbles, encouraging you with a smile is to offer a helping hand and a gentle nudge to try again. It's all part of learning and growing.

Finding that balance between helping and letting go can be tricky. While it's sometimes hard to control, there's really no point in getting angry if they don't get it right the first time. Even if that means there's more food on their clothes than in their mouths because they want to do it themselves. That's what a good bib is for, right?

Some more tips for those brave explorers

Let their imagination run wild

When you encourage your toddler to play on their own, you give wings to their imagination. Provide them with toys that spark creativity and you'll be amazed at what that vivid imagination comes up with!

Not sure what toys are appropriate? How about a bath toy that is good for their motor skills? Or some bath crayons that stimulate their imagination?

Meal Adventures

Mealtime adventures are also a great opportunity for independence. With the right tools and some encouragement, your child can eat independently and explore the different tastes and textures of food. How about a plastic mat under the chair for easy cleanup afterwards? Or use your dog as the ultimate crumb cleaner 🙂 .

We at Nûby offer a wide range of dinnerware ergonomically designed to fit perfectly in little hands and make meals both fun for them, and easy for mom and dad.

And have you heard of our Nibbler? This tool is perfect for safely introducing your little one to solid food. They can safely chew on the silicone part where you insert pieces of fruit or vegetables, allowing them to learn new tastes and textures without risk of choking. And you are the supporter as they embark on these tasty adventures!
